Mahama set to Introduce Extra Public Holiday for Eid ul-Fitr

Accra, Ghana - 11 Jan, 2025 - Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled plans to introduce an additional public holiday to mark Eid ul-Fitr, a move aimed at recognizing the significant contributions of the Muslim community to the country's development.

Speaking at the National Muslim Prayer and Thanksgiving service in Accra, President Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to fulfilling campaign promises made to the Muslim community.

According to him, the proposed amendment to the Holidays Act will enable Muslims to celebrate Eid ul-Fitr with two days of festivities, highlighting the importance of this occasion.

He stated that once Parliament resumes, the government will initiate the necessary legislative processes to make the additional holiday a reality.

“We promised to add one more holiday to the Eid ul-Fitr. So as soon as Parliament settles, we’re going to amend the Holidays Act to include an extra holiday on the occasion. And so this year, after we finish the fast of the Ramadan, we will have two holidays,'' he stated.

This development is expected to bring joy to Ghana's Muslim community, who will now have more time to celebrate and observe this significant religious occasion.
