Mahama Demands Justice for Victims of 2005 Gambia Massacre
Banjul, The Gambia - 19 Jan, 2025 - Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama has issued a poignant call for justice, seeking accountability for the 2005 massacre in Gambia that claimed the lives of 56 West African migrants, mostly from Ghana.
The brutal killings, carried out by Gambian security forces allegedly under former President Yahya Jammeh's orders, remain a dark stain on Gambia's history. Nearly two decades on, the victims' families continue to demand justice and reparations.
During his inaugural visit to Gambia, President Mahama urged the international community to take concrete steps towards compensating the victims' families and ensuring that those responsible face justice.
“We have been following the processes that have occurred with regards to truth and reconciliation and we think that the process will exorcise the pain that people have gone through in the period where this was not going on well democratically.
“We know that there are many other processes that need to be gone through including bringing people to justice for crimes that were committed in the period of President Jammeh. Ghanaians were involved and some of our countrymen were killed,” he stated.
