Lawyer Bernard Bediako Baidoo Clinches NDC Ticket for Akwatia By-Election

Accra, Ghana – 4 August, 2025 – Lawyer Bernard Bediako Baidoo has won the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary in Akwatia Constituency, securing 380 votes out of 975 ballots cast. The primary election was held on August 4, 2025, to choose the party's candidate for the upcoming September 2 by-election.

Baidoo, who serves as the NDC Constituency Secretary for Akwatia, narrowly defeated his closest rival, Erasmus Ali Korney, who garnered 366 votes. Former MP Henry Boakye Yiadom, whom Baidoo previously represented as legal counsel, trailed with 226 votes. The victory marks a significant turn of events, given Baidoo's previous role in Yiadom's 2024 election petition against the late MP Ernest Yaw Kumi.

The by-election is scheduled for September 2, 2025, following the death of Ernest Yaw Kumi, the sitting MP, on July 7, 2025. Baidoo will face Solomon Asumadu, the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) candidate, in what promises to be a fiercely contested race. The NDC is expected to intensify efforts to retake the Akwatia seat, which they lost to the NPP in the 2024 general election.

The outcome of the primary reflects shifting dynamics within the NDC's local structures, with members opting for fresh representation. Baidoo's emergence as the candidate signals a new chapter for the NDC in Akwatia, as the party prepares to face off against the NPP in the upcoming by-election.
