Kwesi Nyantakyi Walks Free After 5-Year Trial
Kwesi Nyantakyi is former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President

Accra, Ghana - 13 Feb, 2025 - A high-profile corruption trial in Ghana has ended in the acquittal of former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi.

The Accra High Court through Her Ladyship Justice Marie-Louise Simmonds, delivered the verdict after the prosecution failed to present any evidence or call a single witness throughout the five-year trial.

The case against Nyantakyi was sparked by an undercover investigation by journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas in 2018, which alleged widespread corruption in Ghanaian football. The exposé led to Nyantakyi's resignation as GFA President and his subsequent prosecution.

However, despite listing five potential witnesses, the prosecution was unable to secure testimony from any of them. One witness even refused to testify unless allowed to wear a mask, a demand that was deemed unacceptable by the court.

The court's decision to acquit Nyantakyi was influenced by a recent ruling by the Court of Appeal, which emphasized the importance of conducting fair trials within a reasonable timeframe. With no evidence presented against him, the court found no basis to continue the case against Nyantakyi and his co-accused.
