Israel-Iran Conflict: Ghana Closes Tehran Embassy, Evacuates Citizens from Iran Amid Escalating Tensions

Accra, Ghana - 16 June, 2025 - The Ghanaian government has initiated an immediate evacuation of its citizens from Iran following the escalation of tensions between Israel and Iran. According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the decision was made to prioritize the safety of Ghanaian lives in the face of the growing conflict.

The evacuation effort, which is currently underway, involves relocating Ghanaian diplomats, students, professionals, and other nationals through land borders.

In a statement on his x account, Ablakwa noted that the Ghanaian embassy in Tehran has been closed with immediate effect to ensure the security of embassy staff.

He added that, while the situation in Iran is being closely monitored, the government is also keeping a close eye on developments in Israel.

According to him,  the embassy in Tel Aviv has been instructed to reduce operations to a bare minimum, and Ghanaians in Israel have been advised to maintain close communication with the consular department.

The government has assured Ghanaians that it will spare no effort in protecting its citizens and keeping them out of harm's way. The government has also reiterated its call for both parties to pursue diplomatic options and end hostilities, emphasizing the need for peace in the region.

The Mahama Administration has, in the interest of the protection of Ghanaian lives, decided to immediately evacuate Ghanaians living in Iran following an escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict. 

To guarantee the safety of our embassy staff, Ghana's embassy in Tehran has been closed with immediate effect. 

The evacuation through land borders covers all Ghanaian diplomats, students, professionals, and other compatriots.

Meanwhile, we are equally keenly following developments in Israel and will advise shortly. In the interim, we have instructed that embassy operations in Tel Aviv be reduced to the barest minimum, and all Ghanaians in Israel must maintain close communication with our consular department. 

Government assures that no effort would be spared in protecting Ghanaian lives and keeping all Ghanaians out of harm's way.

The Government of Ghana reiterates its demand on both parties to pursue diplomatic options and end hostilities.
