IGP Appointment Lies with President Mahama, Not Me - Muntaka

Accra, Ghana - 24 Jan, 2025 - Interior Minister-Designate, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has clarified that the appointment and dismissal of top security officials, including the Inspector General of Police, is the sole prerogative of President John Dramani Mahama.

Speaking during his parliamentary vetting, Muntaka emphasized that his role is limited to providing recommendations, with the President holding the final authority. This clarification comes amid speculation over the future of current IGP, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

Muntaka stressed that any decisions regarding the leadership of security agencies will be made by the President, in line with his vision and objectives for the country.

“I can assure you that there will be assessment of all team members and President John Dramani Mahama has a vision and objective for which Ghanaians have voted for him and all that will be reviewed in line.

“And those who will be harmful in assisting him in the national interest will be dealt with but I will not be able to deal with specific individuals and determine who stays or goes. I do not have that power. I can only make recommendations to the President.”
