I Tried to Reform Ghana Water, and I Rather Became the Victim - Afenyo-Markin

Accra, Ghana - 25 Feb, 2025 - Ghana's reform efforts are being 'strangled' by entrenched interests, the country's Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has warned, citing his own failed attempt to overhaul the state-owned water company as a stark example of the obstacles to meaningful change.
Speaking during the vetting of the Deputy Energy Minister-Designate, Richard Gyan-Mensah on Tuesday Feb, 2025, Afenyo-Markin disclosed, that despite his efforts to push for much-needed changes, he faced relentless opposition and ultimately became a victim of the entrenched political and bureaucratic resistance.
He lamented the lack of support for genuine reforms, which often leads to stagnation and inefficiencies that persist across successive governments.
“I tried to reform Ghana Water, and I rather became the victim. It makes me sad as a politician because we don’t support each other for real reforms,” he lamented.
Afenyo-Markin emphasized the importance of being assertive in pushing for reforms, stating that without bold action, the same challenges will persist.
“If you are not assertive, you will spend your time there, come back, and find the same political football being played. The system will fight you, but you must be bold and push for real reforms,” he urged, the Energy Minister-Designate.
