Health Minister Orders One-Week Probe into Ridge Hospital Assault
Accra ,August 19,2025 - The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has given a one-week ultimatum to a newly constituted committee tasked with investigating the assault on nurses and health professionals at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge).
The directive follows the circulation of a viral video capturing a violent altercation between some relatives of a patient and medical staff at the hospital's emergency department.
The incident has sparked widespread concern over the safety of health workers in the line of duty. Minister Akandoh visited the hospital, interacted with health workers, and reassured them of a thorough investigation.
Akandoh while engaging journalists after a courtesy meeting with the German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ) on Tuesday, August 19, emphasized his commitment to get to the root of the matter.
"They were demoralised, so I had to assure them of a thorough investigation. After my visit, we constituted a committee to investigate the matter within a week, after which the law will take its course," he stated.
The committee is expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the assault and identify those responsible. The Minister has emphasized the importance of completing the investigation within the given timeframe, ensuring that justice is served and measures are put in place to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The incident has drawn condemnation from both the medical community and civil society organizations, highlighting the need for improved safety measures and support for healthcare professionals.
