Gregory Afoko Granted Bail After 9-Year Detention

Accra, Ghana - 21 Feb, 2025 - In a significant development, the High Court in Accra has granted bail to Gregory Afoko, a key suspect in the 2015 murder of former Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Adams Mahama. Afoko, who has been in detention for nearly a decade, was granted bail in the sum of GH₵500,000 with two sureties.
This marks a major turning point in a case that has spanned almost 10 years. Afoko's lawyers filed a fresh bail application on February 17, which was the third time the accused had prayed the court to grant him bail.
Afoko is accused of conspiring with others to assassinate Mahama in a brutal acid attack outside his Bolgatanga home in 2015. The trial commenced in 2019 and concluded in 2023, but the jury returned a hung verdict on both counts of murder and conspiracy to commit murder against Afoko.
As a result, the court ordered a retrial for Afoko, and he was re-arrested after the proceedings and denied bail. However, his lawyers successfully urged the court to grant him bail pending trial.
While Afoko's bail signals progress for his defense, the trial remains ongoing as the state continues its prosecution. The case has been adjourned to March 5, 2025, due to an improperly constituted jury panel.
