Govt to Restore Original Names of Public Universities Changed Under Akufo-Addo in New Bill

Accra, Ghana - 05 May, 2025 - The Ghanaian government is set to introduce a bill in Parliament aimed at renaming several public universities, including the C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences.

According to Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu, the move forms part of a broader initiative to review the naming of public universities established or renamed during former President Nana Akufo-Addo's tenure.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of the Governing Council of C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences in Accra, Iddrisu revealed that extensive consultations had been held with various stakeholders, including the academic community, traditional rulers, alumni associations, students, and civil society.

These consultations, he said, had indicated a likelihood of reverting to the original names or visions of these institutions.

The Minister emphasized that the proposed renaming is not intended to undermine the legacies of individuals after whom the universities were named. Instead, the aim is to reflect the foundational ethos and historical identities of the institutions.

“We have had extensive consultations with the academic community, traditional rulers, alumni associations, students, and civil society. As a result, the name C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences is likely to change—possibly reverting to the original vision.

“There will be a general bill to consider the renaming of several public universities that were renamed or established during former President Akufo-Addo’s administration.''

“This is not to say those individuals do not deserve recognition, but the renaming will aim to reflect the foundational ethos and historical identities of the institutions,” he added.

Other universities likely to be affected by the review include the University of Mines and Technology and the Abdulai Salifu University.

The bill is expected to be tabled in Parliament soon, formalizing the renaming process.
