Govt to Amend PPA Act to Made-in-Ghana Goods – Goosie Tanoh

Accra, Ghana - 17 March, 2025 - In a bid to revitalize its manufacturing sector and promote local consumption, the Ghanaian government has announced plans to amend the Public Procurement Authority Act.

The move aims to prioritize the purchase of locally made goods, a key component of the country's ambitious 24-hour economy policy.

Presidential Advisor Goosie Tanoh outlined the initiative at the 2025 Post-Budget Workshop, emphasizing the need to support local manufacturing and reduce reliance on foreign goods. Tanoh pointed to the success of Asian economies, which made local procurement a priority and have since experienced remarkable growth.

“Other components of the 24-hour economy is a programme called Go Ghana. And that Go Ghana is basically a mobilisation programme where every Ghanaian who cares about their community, about the country, will give in their effort to be able to do whether it’s environmental sanitation, but also buying made in Ghana goods.

“So the only way to institutionalise it is look at the PPA law and see how we can offer a guaranteed offtake for local manufacturing and local content so we can grow our economies, learn from the Asian tigers who made it a priority to buy their own goods, and today look at where they are and how everybody compares us to them,” Tanoh stated.

The proposed amendment to the PPA Act is expected to provide a guaranteed market for locally produced goods, driving economic growth and transformation. While the policy will be private sector-driven, the government will seek minimal funding in the mid-year budget review to support the initiative.

The "Go Ghana" program, a key component of the 24-hour economy policy, aims to mobilize citizens to support local manufacturers and promote environmental sanitation.
