Armed Soldiers' Misconduct at McDan Demolition Site Sparks Government Outrage

Accra, Ghana – 30 July, 2025 - The government has vehemently condemned the attempted arrest of JoyNews journalist Carlos Calony and the alleged assault of an eyewitness by a soldier at a demolition site in Accra. In a strongly-worded statement, Minister for Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu described the actions as "utterly unacceptable".

According to reports, Calony was taken into custody by National Security operatives while covering the demolition of a warehouse under construction along Spintex Road. The circumstances surrounding his arrest remain unclear. This incident follows the reported pickup of three senior officials of the McDan Group by National Security operatives in connection with the same demolition.

President John Mahama has directed the Minister for Defence and the National Security Coordinator to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. The government has also promised to take swift disciplinary and punitive action against those responsible.

The administration has reiterated its unwavering commitment to protecting press freedom and ensuring the safety of journalists. "A free and unfettered press is a cornerstone of our democracy," the statement emphasized.

The government has assured that it will safeguard the rights of all citizens and guarantee their security at all times.
