Ghana's Supreme Court Rejects Bid to Block President's Security Appointments
COP Christian Tetteh Yohunu is the new Inspector General of the Ghana Police Service.

Accra, Ghana - 26 March, 2025 - Ghana's Supreme Court has rejected an attempt by IMANI Africa and Security Analyst Prof. Kwesi Aning to block the President John Mahama's recent appointments of security chiefs, ruling it moot after the President had already made the appointments.

The decision comes after former President Mahama appointed COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Inspector General of Police, replacing Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, and made leadership changes in other security agencies.

IMANI Africa and Prof. Aning had argued that the President's move was an attempt to preempt the Supreme Court's ruling on the President's authority to unilaterally dismiss security chiefs. They claimed that the Constitution only allows for the removal of security service chiefs based on stated misconduct.

Despite this, the Supreme Court dismissed the application, ruling that it did not prevent the President from carrying out his constitutionally mandated duties.

The Court has scheduled May 7 for its final judgment on the President's power to terminate security chiefs' appointments without proof of misconduct.
