Ghana's Fight Against Mpox Gets Boost from WHO
Accra, Ghana – 4 August, 2025 –
The donation, valued at USD 36,700, includes personal Protective Equipment to enhance infection prevention and control for frontline health workers
GeneXpert Cartridges to improve diagnostic capacity, facilitating rapid and accurate testing, particularly at decentralized levels
and risk Communication Materials to promote public awareness and behavioral change.
WHO Regional Director for Africa, Professor Mohamed Yakub Janabi, reaffirmed the organization's commitment to supporting Ghana's public health response during a brief ceremony at the Ministry. He acknowledged Ghana's commendable leadership in managing the outbreak.
Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, thanked the WHO for its continued support and expressed Ghana's interest in adopting vaccines as part of its response strategy. He urged WHO to expedite assistance in this regard. The Minister also encouraged the public to maintain good hygiene practices and seek prompt medical attention if symptoms such as fever, cough, headache, or skin rashes occur.
As of July 30, 2025, Ghana has recorded a total of 302 Mpox cases, with one reported death.
