208 Arrested, 99 Excavators Seized in Nationwide Anti-Galamsey Operation

Western Region - 14 May, 2025 - The Ghana Police Service has intensified its efforts to combat illegal mining, arresting 208 suspects and retrieving a significant amount of heavy machinery and firearms in a nationwide operation.
The operation, which took place between March and May 2025, targeted hotspots across several regions, with the Western Region being a major focus.
According to a police statement released on Tuesday, May 13, the operation resulted in the seizure of 99 excavators, three bulldozers, and various other equipment, including guns and gold detectors. The arrests were made across different regions, with the Western Regional Police Command making significant recoveries, including 85 excavators and three bulldozers in a single operation around Samreboi.
The operation also led to the arrest of foreign nationals, including Chinese and Burkinabe individuals, who were found to be involved in illegal mining activities. The police have reiterated their commitment to protecting Ghana's environment and natural resources and have called on the public to support their efforts.
The suspects are currently undergoing legal processes, and the police have emphasized the need for continued cooperation from the public to effectively combat illegal mining. The operation is part of the police's ongoing efforts to safeguard Ghana's water bodies and natural resources from the harmful effects of illegal mining.
