Ghana Severs Diplomatic Ties with Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic
Accra, Ghana - 10 Jan, 2025 - In a significant shift in its foreign policy stance, Ghana has suspended diplomatic relations with the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), a move that aligns the country with Morocco's position on the Western Sahara issue.
This decision was conveyed through an official document dated 9 Jan, from Ghana's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration to Morocco's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates. Ghana has also notified the African Union, the United Nations, and Morocco of its position through diplomatic channels.
Ghana's move is seen as a major diplomatic victory for Morocco, which has been actively working to garner international support for its stance on the Western Sahara issue. Under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Morocco has successfully convinced 46 countries, including 13 African nations, to sever or suspend their relations with the SADR since 2000.
Ghana initially recognized the SADR in 1979, but its decision to suspend diplomatic relations marks a significant reversal of its previous stance. The country has expressed its support for Morocco's efforts to find a mutually acceptable solution to the Western Sahara conflict, describing these efforts as "good-faith initiatives".
