Businessman in court for allegedly defrauding 18 rent seekers of GHC100k
Accra, Ghana - 10 Jan, 2025 - A 48-year-old businessman, Jennings Tetteh Cole, appeared before an Accra Circuit Court on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, accused of defrauding 18 rent seekers of over GHC100,000.
Jennings, who faces 18 counts of defrauding by false pretences, pleaded not guilty. The complainants reportedly paid sums ranging from GHC3,000 to GHC9,200 each, totalling GHC100,060.
Despite promising to refund the money, the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Ramata Asumah, stated that no refunds have been made.
The court, presided over by Mr. Bright Samuel Acquah, granted Jennings bail of GHC150,000 and adjourned the case to January 20, 2025. The prosecution was directed to file disclosures before the next hearing.
Chief Inspector Asumah revealed that the accused advertised a dilapidated single room in Nungua for rent on the Jiji trading app, attracting multiple victims.
Between October 21 and December 7, 2024, Jennings allegedly collected money from 18 complainants under the guise of renovating the room for rental purposes.
The victims discovered the scam after realizing the same room had been rented out to all of them. Following this, they reported the matter to the Nungua Police, leading to Jennings’ arrest on December 8, 2024.
During police interrogation, Jennings admitted to the crime in his caution statement. The prosecution also noted that efforts are underway to apprehend an accomplice linked to the case.
