Ghana Requires $90m to Prevent Looming Power Crisis - GRIDCo Report

Accra, Ghana - 08 Jan, 2025 - A recent report by GRIDCo has revealed that Ghana requires $90 million to purchase fuel and prevent a looming power crisis. The crisis is imminent due to the closure of the West African Gas Pipeline (WAPCo) network, which traditionally supplied fuel from Nigeria to Ghana's power plants.

The WAPCo pipeline closure has left Ghana's power sector in a precarious state, with the country relying heavily on thermal power plants to generate electricity. These plants contribute over 65% of Ghana's dependable capacity, but require significant amounts of fuel to operate.

According to energy experts, Ghana's energy situation is critical, with the country facing generation/supply deficits of at least 140MW and 518MW in 2023 and 2024, respectively. The deficits are expected to worsen in 2025 and 2026, with shortfalls of at least 467MW and 916MW predicted.

GRIDCo's report outlines a comprehensive plan to mitigate the effects of the impending fuel shortage and ensure grid stability. The strategies include:

- Adjusting maintenance schedules to minimize generator shutdowns during the WAPCo maintenance period
- Securing alternative fuels, such as light crude oil, to substitute natural gas for power generation
- Implementing load management measures, including load-shedding as a last resort, to stabilize the grid

The report cautions that inaction could lead to extended power outages, crippling economic activities and public services.

The looming power crisis has sparked concerns among businesses and households, which are still reeling from the effects of previous power outages.
