Ghana-India Cricket friendship forged as Indian High Commissioner hosts Strongroom Cricket Club
Accra, Ghana - Nov 11, 2024 - In a move to strengthen cricket ties between Ghana and the UK, Indian High Commissioner to Ghana, His Excellency Manish Gupta, hosted a cocktail evening for the Strongroom Cricket Club and the Ghana Cricket Association (GCA).
The event celebrated the successful tour of the Strongroom Cricket Club in Ghana, where they played six friendly matches in Accra and Obuasi, winning two and losing four.
Jon Gower, team leader of the Strongroom Cricket Club, expressed gratitude to the High Commissioner for the warm reception. He revealed plans to collaborate with Ghanaian cricketers based in the UK to support the growth of cricket in Ghana.
“I am sure there are some Ghanaian cricketers in the UK and if this is something the GCA will look out for they can form a team and invite local based cricketers to play in London,” he suggested.
GCA President, Emmanuel Owusu-Ansah Asare, thanked the High Commissioner for hosting the team and hailed the tour as a historic moment for Ghanaian cricket. "This is the beginning of greater things to happen to the GCA," Asare said, highlighting Ghana's first international friendly match since 1998. He emphasized the GCA's openness to mutually beneficial collaborations.
High Commissioner Gupta, acknowledging India's status as a cricket powerhouse, assured the gathering of the High Commission's support for Ghana's cricket development. The evening fostered networking and socialization among the Strongroom Cricket Club, GCA, and the Indian High Commission.
This diplomatic gesture underscores the growing importance of cricket in Ghana, following the country's participation in international tournaments, including the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Sub Regional Africa Qualifier Group A.
