Ghana Has Enough Fuel Reserve to Last Beyond 2 Months - NPA Boss Assures
Accra, Ghana - 21 June, 2025 - Ghana's fuel supply has been a topic of concern in recent days, with the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran sparking fears of global supply disruptions. However, the Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Edudzi Tamekloe, has sought to allay these concerns, assuring Ghanaians that the country has sufficient fuel reserves to last more than two months.
During an interview with JoyNews, Mr. Tamakloe revealed that Ghana's current fuel stock includes over 200 million litres of petrol and 150 million litres of diesel, which he believes is enough to maintain market stability in the medium term, and he is confident that this reserve will shield the country from major supply disruptions.
“I can assure the good people of Ghana that currently, as we speak, we have enough stock or reserve to last us beyond two months,” he said.
“With all efforts, we are confident that we wouldn’t have any problem with supply disruptions at all.”
The NPA boss's statement comes amid growing worries about the impact of Middle East tensions on oil shipments through the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
Meanwhile, Mr. Tamakloe also addressed the suspension of the implementation of the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Act, which imposes a GHS1 per litre levy on petrol and diesel. The government had earlier suspended the rollout of the new levy, originally scheduled to take effect on June 16, pending further review. Mr. Tamakloe stated that the government is monitoring global developments and will decide on the rollout date in consultation with stakeholders, including the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies.
“The government is always monitoring global events and will respond in the next foreseeable days. It doesn’t look like there has been any serious disruption… but there will be enough consultation with the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies, among others, before the rollout will come.''
