Ghana and Brazil: Building a Stronger Future Through Parliamentary Diplomacy

Brasilia ,Brazil - In a significant step towards strengthening bilateral relations and promoting development, a high-level parliamentary delegation from Ghana's Parliament recently visited the Brasilia Chamber of Deputies in Brazil. The delegation, led by Hon. Bernard Ahiafor, First Deputy Speaker, held meetings with Brazilian lawmakers and officials to discuss best practices in data management, open parliament, and integration of statistical data into legislative work.

The visit, which took place from October 7th to 9th, 2025, aimed to improve the legislative process in Ghana and promote cooperation between the two countries. During the meetings, the Ghanaian delegation learned about Brazil's experiences in using data to inform policy decisions and legislative drafting. They also discussed ways to enhance cooperation between Ghana and Brazil in areas such as legislative drafting, budget analysis, and oversight.

 

Strengthening Parliamentary Ties

The visit marked a significant milestone in the strengthening of parliamentary ties between Ghana and Brazil. The Ghanaian delegation held meetings with key Brazilian officials, including the First Secretary of the Chamber of Deputies, Congressman Carlos Veras, and the Secretary for International Relations, Congressman Félix Mendonça Júnior.

According to Hon. Ahiafor, the visit was a huge success, with both sides committing to strengthen their parliamentary ties and promote cooperation in areas of mutual interest. "This visit has opened doors for us to learn from Brazil's experiences and expertise in legislative drafting, budget analysis, and oversight," Hon. Ahiafor said. "We are confident that this cooperation will contribute to the development of effective laws and policies in Ghana."

Learning from Brazil's Best Practices

During their visit, the Ghanaian delegation learned about Brazil's best practices in data management, open parliament, and legislative drafting. They visited the National Congress and the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), where they gained valuable insights into Brazil's data management systems and statistical analysis.

The delegation was impressed by Brazil's experiences in using data to inform policy decisions and legislative drafting. "Brazil's use of data to inform policy decisions is something that we can learn from and apply in Ghana," said Dr. John Nathaniel Boateng, Deputy Director of the Data Management Department. "We are grateful for the opportunity to learn from Brazil's experiences and expertise in this area."

A New Era of Cooperation

The visit marks the beginning of a new era of cooperation between Ghana and Brazil. Both countries have committed to strengthening their bilateral relations and promoting development through effective governance and legislation.

Ghana's Ambassador to Brazil, Nii Amasah Namoale, has pledged to work closely with the Brazilian government and stakeholders to strengthen bilateral cooperation in key sectors, including trade and investment, tourism, engineering, infrastructure development, and the services industry.

"The visit of the Ghanaian parliamentary delegation is a significant step towards strengthening our bilateral relations," Ambassador Namoale said. "We are committed to working with Brazil to promote development and cooperation in areas of mutual interest."

 

Hon. Bernard Ahiafor, Ghana's First Deputy Speaker emphasized that their visit to Brazil marks a significant milestone in the strengthening of bilateral relations between the two countries indicating that his delegation's meetings with Brazilian lawmakers and officials, as well as their visits to key institutions provided valuable insights into Brazil's best practices in data management, open parliament, and legislative drafting thus as Ghana and Brazil continue to strengthen their parliamentary ties, it is expected that the two countries will explore new opportunities for cooperation and development with a shared commitment to achieve new milestones of progress and build a brighter future for their citizens.
