GES Defies CHASS Plea, Maintains SHS Reopening Date

Accra, Ghana - 03 Jan, 2025 - The Ghana Education Service (GES) has reaffirmed that the reopening date for Senior High Schools remains unchanged, despite a request by the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) to postpone the reopening.

CHASS had earlier warned the Ministry of Education that failure to address the financial constraints facing second-cycle schools before January 3, 2025, could disrupt the reopening process.

In a statement issued a few days ago, CHASS strongly advised against the reopening of schools, citing the unresolved financial concerns.

However, the GES, in a statement issued on Thursday, January 2, confirmed that the 2024/25 academic calendar will proceed as previously announced, with Senior High School students expected to return to school today, January 3, 2025.

The GES reminded students, staff, parents, and the general public that there are no changes to the academic schedule, with primary and Junior High Schools set to resume classes on January 8, 2025.

According to the GES management, they are actively engaging with the Ministry of Education to address the concerns raised by CHASS, with a view to finding a swift resolution to ensure a smooth commencement of the academic year.

The GES urged all stakeholders to take note of the important dates and make necessary arrangements to prepare for the start of the new academic year, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the schedule to ensure a successful reopening of schools across the country.
