Fair Wages Commission Boss Calls for Hourly Wage System for Casual Workers in Ghana

Accra, Ghana - 19 May, 2025 - The Acting CEO of Ghana's Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, Dr. George Smith-Graham, is calling for the introduction of an hourly wage system across all sectors to enhance income fairness, particularly for casual and low-income workers.
Speaking during a parliamentary committee visit, Dr. Smith-Graham argued that hourly wages would better compensate casual laborers, formalize the informal sector, and improve transparency in salary calculations.
“If we begin to look at an hourly wage structure, it will allow casual workers to be better compensated for their time and could help reduce income inequalities in the labour market,” he stated.

This proposal comes as officials from the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) highlighted existing provisions allowing certain unemployed individuals to access their pension funds.
NPRA's CEO, Mr. Chris Boadi-Mensah, also suggested raising Ghana's retirement age from 60 to 65 to ensure the pension system's long-term sustainability.
