Election 2024: EC dragging its feet to announce results is causing increased violence - NDC
Tensions are rising in Ghana as the Electoral Commission (EC) delays announcing the results of Saturday's general elections. The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed concerns that the delay is fueling tensions and contributing to pockets of violence across the country.
Addressing the media from the NDC’s headquarters on Sunday, December 8, the party’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia called on the EC to expedite the announcement of the results to prevent further escalation.
Asiedu Nketia emphasized that both the NDC and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) have completed their independent collation of results, and it is now up to the EC to declare the official outcomes.
According to him,the delay has created a power vacuum, leaving room for anxiety, misinformation, and unrest among the populace. The NDC warned that the prolonged delay could have dangerous consequences, particularly among the youth who are demanding clarity and transparency in the electoral process.
“The two key players [NPP and NDC] have produced our results, yet the EC is dragging its feet to announce the results. We made known in our previous update that the only way to ensure peace was for the EC to announce the results, but we are still waiting and our agents are still waiting across the country, and because of the delay, the youth of this country have started reacting, and that is a dangerous sign'', he stated.
