EC Laments Police Inaction Amid Collation Centre Violence
Ghana's Electoral Commission (EC) has expressed outrage over the National Elections Security Taskforce's failure to provide adequate protection for its staff during the parliamentary results collation process.
The EC's criticism comes after its staff were allegedly intimidated and forced to declare incomplete results in nine constituencies, including Nsawam Adoagyiri, Ahafo Ano South West, and Dome Kwabenya.
The EC has suspended the re-collation exercise, which was being held at the Tesano Police Training School in Accra, citing inadequate security measures. EC Chairperson Jean Mensa condemned the lack of effective security arrangements at a press conference on Dec 19, stating that staff were threatened and forced to declare results despite the presence of police.
“Unfortunately, as we have witnessed on TV, images have emerged showing our staff being threatened and made to declare results stemming from incomplete collation processes.
“Unfortunately, this has been in the presence of the police. Though the police have been present at all the collation centres, the supporters of political parties have managed to gain access to the collation centres and have disrupted the collation process,” she stated.
