EC Halts Re-Collation of Election Results at Tesano Police Depot
The Electoral Commission of Ghana has suspended the re-collation of presidential and parliamentary election results for some constituencies at the Tesano Police Depot, citing disruptions caused by political party supporters.
The decision comes after the National Democratic Congress (NDC) questioned the legality of the re-collation process, describing it as inconsistent with Ghana's electoral laws.
According to the Electoral Commission, the re-collation exercise was necessitated by the failure to complete the collation process on Election Day in some constituencies. However, the process was halted due to disruptions caused by political party supporters.
In a statement, the Commission assured the public that all stakeholders were informed of the change in location for the re-collation exercise and that agents of all political parties observed the process.
''The Electoral Commission wishes to inform the General Public that the re-collation of Presidential and Parliamentary Elections' results which was ongoing at the Tesano Police Depot for constituencies whose collation did not follow the legal process as enshrined in C.I. 127 as well as constituencies where collation on Election Day could not be completed have been put on hold until further notice.
''The inability to collate and declare results on Election Day which led to the re-collation at the Tesano Police Depot, was due to disruptions of our collation processes by Political Party supporters on Election Day and the days following.
''It is instructive for the Public to know that the Commission informed Political Parties of the change in location to the Tesano Police Training Depot after agreement with the Inspector General of Police and his Team,'' portions of the ststement read.
Despite this, the NDC has expressed concerns about the legitimacy of the process.
At a press conference, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia for instance questioned the legality of the re-collation.
He described the process as illegal and inconsistent with Ghana’s electoral laws.
“We in the NDC believe that what is happening at the police training school amounts to illegality. It is not founded on any electoral law, nor is it based on any consensus reached by the parties and the Electoral Commission,” he stated.
