Dr. Asiamah takes over as BoG Governor as Ernest Addison retires
Dr. Johnson is the new Governor of Bank of Ghana.

Accra, Ghana - 31 Jan, 2025 - President John Dramani Mahama has nominated Dr. Johnson Asiamah, a former Second Deputy Governor, to succeed Dr. Addison, subject to approval by the Council of State.

Dr. Asiamah's nomination comes after current Governor Dr. Ernest Addison announced his retirement, effective March 31, 2025.

“President John Dramani Mahama has nominated Dr. Johnson Asiamah to serve as Governor of the Bank of Ghana pending approval by the Council of State. Dr Asiamah’s nomination follows the receipt and acceptance of a formal request by current Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, to proceed on leave leading to his retirement on 31st March, 2025.” the statement by Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu read.

Dr. Asiamah, a seasoned economist, previously served as Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana from 2016 to 2017. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Southampton and has extensive experience in monetary policy formulation, financial stability regulation, and economic research.

Meanwhile, Dr. Addison will proceed on terminal leave on February 3, 2025, ahead of his official retirement. His departure marks the end of a successful eight-year tenure as Governor, during which he served two full terms.

The Bank of Ghana has thanked Dr. Addison for his distinguished service and wishes him a restful retirement in a release issued by the Communications Department of the Bank.

“The Bank of Ghana thanks the Governor for his meritorious and distinguished service to the Bank and the Republic and wishes Dr. Ernest Addison a restful retirement''.

Dr. Asiamah's nomination is subject to approval by the Council of State, after which he will take the reins as the new Governor of the Bank of Ghana.
