Democracy on the Pitch: Parliament Launches 2nd Edition of Democracy Cup

Accra, Ghana – 25 July, 2025 – The Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, launched the 2nd edition of the Democracy Cup on Thursday 24 July at the Justice D. F. Annan Auditorium within Parliament House. This year's edition, scheduled for Friday, August 29, promises to be an exciting encounter between city rivals Accra Hearts of Oak and Accra Great Olympics. The curtain raiser will feature Members of Parliament verses the Judiciary.

The Democracy Cup is an annual football tournament initiated by Parliament in 2024 to promote democratic values, national unity, and peaceful coexistence through sports. The maiden edition, held on July 17, 2024, at the Accra Sports Stadium, saw Kumasi Asante Kotoko emerge as champions after defeating Accra Hearts of Oak 2-1.

Parliament aims to use football as a unifier in promoting democracy and national unity. The Democracy Cup symbolizes Ghana's democratic journey and the role of sports in fostering peace, cohesion, and patriotism. By bringing together football clubs and stakeholders, the tournament seeks to strengthen bonds and promote friendly competition.

The launch event, attended by Members of Parliament, football administrators, club supporters, and members of the public, unveiled the participating teams and provided details on the match format and accompanying activities.

The tournament promises to be an exciting experience, with organizers assuring stakeholders of a bigger and more thrilling event this year.
