Counterfeit Diapers Worth Millions Seized in Ashanti Region

Ashanti Region,Ghana,August 21,2025 - In a major operation targeting illicit products, National Security agents in the Ashanti Region have seized multiple consignments of counterfeit diapers originating from Nigeria. The fake diapers, falsely bearing the label of a well-known Ghanaian brand, were discovered during a standard examination at Asafo approximately three weeks prior.

According to sources, the fake diapers were accompanied by falsified documents, which were intended to deceive regulatory authorities. Samples of the seized diapers have been sent to the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) for testing, and preliminary results have confirmed that the products are indeed counterfeit and unsafe for use.

This recent bust is part of a broader effort by National Security and regulatory agencies to protect public health and safety. Deputy Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator, Alhaji Tapsoba Alhassan, in a media engagement revealed that a manhunt is currently underway to track down and arrest the individuals behind the importation of the counterfeit diapers.

In a related development, the FDA has intensified its crackdown on fake diapers amid growing health concerns. The authority recently destroyed over one million counterfeit diapers that had infiltrated the local market.

The Consumer Protection Agency (CPA) has raised concerns about the severe health implications of using fake diapers, including severe skin rashes, infections, and discomfort among babies and toddlers. The agency has urged parents to avoid purchasing unregulated and suspicious diaper brands and is calling on the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority to intensify scrutiny at all entry points to block the importation of such dangerous goods.
