China Agrees to 0% Tariff on All Ghanaian All Exports

Accra, Ghana - 12 June, 2025 - Ghana's Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced a landmark agreement with China's Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, granting Ghana a 0% tariff on all exports to China.

This development is expected to significantly boost trade between the two nations, creating jobs and empowering Ghanaian entrepreneurs.

The agreement, reached on the sidelines of the ongoing China-Africa summit in Changsha, China, builds on the strong bilateral relations between Ghana and China. With China being Ghana's largest trading partner, having exceeded $11 billion in trade volume last year, this tariff exemption is poised to further enhance economic cooperation.

Minister Ablakwa revealed in a statement on his X account that the two countries discussed new industrial projects, including the exploitation of Ghana's bauxite reserves for an integrated aluminum industry, supported by modern rail infrastructure.

Additionally, Ghana and China will work towards establishing an electric car manufacturing plant in Ghana, leveraging the country's strategic lithium deposits.

''China has offered 0% tariff on all exports from Ghana. China is Ghana's number one trading partner with last year's trade volume exceeding US$11billion. This 0% tariff on 100% of goods from Ghana and other African countries will bolster trade, create jobs and produce more Ghanaian entrepreneurs. We also discussed new industrial projects in line with President Mahama's vision including exploiting our bauxite for an integrated aluminium industry powered by modern rail infrastructure. Our bilateral engagement on the sidelines of the ongoing China-Africa summit in Changsha China, further agreed to work towards establishing an electric car manufacturing plant in Ghana anchored on Ghana's strategic lithium deposits,'' he wrote.

He aded that a Special Economic Partnership Agreement between Ghana and China is expected to be signed soon, solidifying their mutually beneficial partnership.

This development underscores President Mahama's administration's commitment to leveraging diplomacy for national transformation.

''Ghana and China will soon sign a special Economic Partnership Agreement to concretise our mutually beneficial partnership. President Mahama's administration is firmly committed to leveraging diplomacy for the transformation of our dear country.''

Ablakwa noted that the strengthened Ghana-China relations are a testament to the enduring legacy of Kwame Nkrumah and Chairman Mao, who laid the foundation for bilateral cooperation 65 years ago.
