Chief Justice orders reopening of courts in Upper East Region amid conflict
Accra, Ghana - Nov 9, 2024 - The Chief Justice of Ghana, Gertrude Torkornoo, has given the green light for courts in the Upper East Region to resume operations, effective immediately.
This decision comes after a temporary closure on October 29 due to escalating violence in Bawku, which sparked concerns among judges and staff about their safety.
Courts Reopened:
- High Court, Bolgatanga
- Circuit Court, Bolgatanga
- District Court, Bolgatanga
- District Court, Bongo
Areas like Bolgatanga, Zuarungu, and Bongo, located several kilometers away from the conflict zone, had petitioned the Chief Justice to reconsider the closure. Their efforts have paid off, as Justice Torkornoo has now directed the reopening of these critical institutions.
A circular issued on November 8 by Judicial Service Secretary, Justice Cyra Pamela Koranteng JA, confirmed the reopening. The move aims to restore judicial services in the region and address the pressing needs of the local community.
