Chamber of Construction Calls for Government Intervention Over Soaring Cement Prices

Acra, Ghana - 28 Feb, 2025 - A GHC9 price hike for a bag of cement has sparked widespread concern among Ghana's construction industry stakeholders, prompting calls for urgent government intervention.
The Ghana Chamber of Construction Industry is leading the charge, seeking stakeholder engagement to address the issue and mitigate its impact on the sector.
According to Emmanuel Cherry, CEO of the Chamber, the price surge will have far-reaching consequences for the industry, exacerbating existing challenge,
“Government through H.E John Dramani Mahama promised that he’s going to make sure that the cedi to the dollar or the cedi to major foreign currencies is stabilised.
“He promised that at the port of clearing, he’s going to make sure that there are other flat rate or what have you to make sure that the importers and exporters will have a ground for them to at least make an even to make sure that prices of goods and services are a bit affordable for everybody. The government has already made those promises; all we need to do now is let stakeholders engage the government and interrogate those particular promises one after the other.
“Bring the technical expertise to support the politician to adjudicate the needs of the masses to make sure the right thing is being done to alleviate the sufferings of the masses,'' Cherry told Citi News
In response to the crisis, the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has pledged to engage cement manufacturers to explore solutions to the rising cost of cement.
The move is seen as a crucial step towards addressing the issue and providing relief to the struggling construction industry.
