Can you push me out? - Wontumi hits back at Mahama's mining policy

Accra, Ghana - As the 2024 elections approach, a policy promise by National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama has sparked a heated response from New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, aka Chairman Wontumi.

Mahama vowed to amend the law to end indiscriminate mining in forest reserves and specifically threatened to eject Akonta Mining, owned by Chairman Wontumi, for environmental desecration. Wontumi has interpreted this as a personal vendetta, claiming that Mahama seeks power to settle scores.

Defiantly, Chairman Wontumi argued that legitimate mining is merely a matter of documentation, which he can easily obtain. He dared Mahama to try and remove him from the forest reserve, confident in his ability to navigate the legal framework.

Can you push Wontumi? Even illegal and legal what is the difference? The difference is a document. So, as a veteran miner, I don’t know how to get documents done?" Wontumi quizzed.

“You want to win to avenge your enemies...anything concerning Ashanti, you don’t like it," he added.
