Cameroon: 92-Year-Old President Biya Declared Election Winner Amidst Deadly Protests
Biya, who is the world's oldest head of state, will now serve an eighth consecutive term - he first came to power in 1982

Cameroon's Constitutional Council has officially declared incumbent President Paul Biya the winner of the country's highly disputed presidential election, held on October 12.

According to official results, the 92-year-old president secured 53.7% of the vote, surpassing his main challenger Issa Tchiroma Bakary who garnered 35.2%.Biya, who has been in power since 1982, will now serve an unprecedented eighth consecutive term, extending his leadership until 2032 .His victory cements his position as the world's oldest serving head of state.

However, the election results have been met with resistance from opposition supporters who claim the ruling party attempted to "steal victory" from them. Tchiroma Bakary had previously declared himself the winner, anticipating that the Constitutional Council would announce tainted results.

The situation on the ground remains tense, with at least four people killed in clashes between protesters and security forces in the commercial city of Douala on Sunday. Streets in Bamenda city in the west are deserted, with residents bracing for potential unrest.

Despite a government ban on protests, opposition supporters continue to defy authorities, demanding credible election results.
