Cab driver murder: Court declines bail for accused persons

Tarkwa, Western Region, Ghana - 05 March, 2025 - The Tarkwa District Court One has declined bail for the nine accused persons charged with the murder of a cab driver, Kwadwo Donkor, alias “Chilling,” at Akotom in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality.
The court made this decision to facilitate further investigations after the defence counsels requested bail on behalf of the accused persons.
The suspects have faced charges of conspiracy to commit a crime and murder, but their pleas have not yet been taken.
The accused persons are expected to reappear before the court, presided over by Mr Charles Owusu Nsiah, on April 3, 2025.
Police Sergeant Enoch Assan Donkor, prosecuting, told the court that the complainant is a businessman residing in Huniso, and the deceased was his employee.
He identified the accused persons as Nana Kwabena Agyarko, Evans Azure, alias Ampana, Peter Kwamena Antwi, Felix Atsu Davor, Sampson Agbodojie, Kojo Bonzy, Stephen Owusu, Kofi Ampabeng, and Lucky Mudoo.
According to the prosecutor, the accused persons, aged between 30 and 72, are a mix of teachers, masons, drivers, and farmers residing in Akotom and Camp.
On November 8, 2024, at approximately 08:30 hours, the deceased left home in his taxicab for work but never returned.
After several failed attempts to contact him, the complainant reported the matter to the police on November 9, 2024, around 14:30 hours.
During investigations, the police received a tip-off that a suspect, Sheriffa, who is currently on the run, had spotted the deceased near her husband’s car in Akotom. Without justification, she allegedly raised a false alarm that he was a thief.
Her actions attracted the accused persons and some youth in the community, who are currently at large.
The accused persons accosted the deceased, and Azure, who was passing by, reportedly provided a rope, which was used to tie the deceased to a nearby electric pole.
Sergeant Donkor said the accused persons and their accomplices then subjected the deceased to severe beatings using various objects, leading to his death.
Upon realizing that Donkor had died, they placed his body in a tricycle and dumped it in a nearby bush along the Tarkwa-Bogoso Highway, approximately 1.5 kilometres from the Akotom community.
On November 10, 2024, Agyarko was picked up to assist police investigations. Initially, he denied any involvement but later confessed and implicated Antwi and others who were still at large.
Agyarko subsequently led the police to the bush where the deceased’s body had been hidden. The body was recovered in an advanced state of decomposition.
Azure was arrested on November 12, 2024, and implicated Antwi and Davor, who were later apprehended from their hideout.
Further police intelligence led to the arrests of the remaining accused persons, all of whom were suspected of involvement in the crime.
The prosecutor informed the court that after investigations, a duplicate docket was forwarded to the Attorney General’s office in Sekondi for review and legal advice.
