Billboard Bust: Roads Ministry Cracks Down on Unauthorized Ads
Accra,Ghana ,August 20,2025 - In a bid to uphold road safety and regulatory compliance, the Ministry of Roads and Highways has mandated the removal of an unauthorized billboard at the Flowerpot Interchange in Accra. The billboard, which seemed to be associated with the Students Loan Trust Fund, was erected without proper authorization, violating key national regulations.
According to the Ministry, the billboard breaches Section 5 of the Ghana Standards Authority's "Advertisement Specification for Outdoor Signs" (GS 847:2019), as well as Sections 11 and 15 of Act 540 and Section 188 of the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (LI 2180). The Ministry emphasized that such installations compromise road safety and the aesthetic appeal of the city's infrastructure.
The Ministry in a statement it issued on Wednesday August 20 ,2025 called upon the Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly to collaborate with the Department of Urban Roads to facilitate the billboard's removal. Furthermore, the Ministry is urging the Advertising Association of Ghana to enforce its code of conduct regarding outdoor advertising structures strictly.
The Ministry of Roads and Highways reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring road safety and protecting Ghana's road infrastructure. The Ministry's stance underscores the importance of adherence to regulations and the need for collaborative efforts between government agencies and private entities to maintain public safety and order.
The Ministry has also advised all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to consult with relevant regional road agencies before granting permits for advertisements along road corridors.
