Bawku violence claims another life, death toll hits 17

Bawku, Upper East Region of Ghana - October 30, 2024 - A devastating outbreak of violence in Bawku, Upper East Region of Ghana, has claimed the life of Tahiru Danbala, a young Forex Bureau trader.

Danbala fell victim to a gun battle while traveling between communities within Bawku, bringing the death toll to 17, including seven women, since the conflict resurfaced last Friday.

The ongoing violence has forced schools and major businesses to shut down, posing a significant threat to lives and livelihoods. The long-standing Bawku conflict was reignited by the return of rival chief Alhaji Seidu Abagre, who had been in exile. His return, combined with recent ambushes targeting travelers, has led to an escalation in violent clashes, resulting in at least eight additional fatalities and numerous injuries.

Government Response: Curfew Imposed

In response to the growing unrest, the Ministry of the Interior declared a curfew effective Monday, October 28, 2024, restricting movement from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM. This decision followed an emergency meeting led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and National Security officials, who emphasized the need for heightened security measures to restore peace in Bawku.

Conflict Background

The Bawku conflict dates back to 1931, revolving around the occupancy of the Bawku skin, which represents chiefly authority in the Bawku traditional area. The dispute between the Kusasi and Mamprusi ethnic groups has led to recurring violent clashes, with multiple attempts at peacebuilding and mediation.
