Bail Application for 28 accused in Abetifi Chief kidnapping denied
Mpraeso, Ghana - Nov 14, 2024 -The Mpraeso Circuit Court has denied bail to 28 suspects accused of kidnapping the Chief of Kwahu Abetifi, sparking violent clashes in the community.
The court, led by Her Lordship Adwoa Akyemaa Ofosu, has remanded the suspects until November 27, citing unfinished investigations.
The suspects' lawyer, Mr. Effah Nkrabia Dartey, expressed frustration with the decision, questioning the lengthy investigation process
“Truth be told, I totally disagree with the judge, because these people were arrested a week ago and sent to cells leading the police to surround the whole environment, what at all are they investigating that is taking so much time I don’t understand.”
“They were charged guilty of kidnapping and firing weapons, but everyone has to be charged individually with specific charges it wasn’t like that they combined everything and made it general which is not the best. No one will be happy about that if he or she is treated that way. The court grants them bail until the investigation is over.”
On the other hand, the Abetifi Traditional Council is satisfied with the outcome. Their spokesperson, Nana Saka Darko, supports the court's decision, emphasizing the need to apprehend remaining suspects.
“I agree with the court 100% for not granting the victims bail because some of the people who were involved have not been arrested yet so there is no essence of granting them bail. There are claims that they are National security persons, but we want to see if they are,” he stated.
