Bagbin Rips into MPs Over Failure to Identify 'Daughter of Murderer' MP
Alban Bagbin is the Speaker of Parliament

Accra, Ghana - 28 May, 2025 - Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has expressed his displeasure and frustration with Members of Parliament (MPs) over their failure to identify the colleague who made a derogatory remark about Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, the Korle Klottey MP, during a heated debate on February 4.

The comment, which described Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings as the "daughter of a murderer," sparked widespread outrage and calls for disciplinary action. Despite the remark being made openly in the chamber, none of the MPs have come forward to pinpoint the individual responsible.

Bagbin directed particular criticism at the Majority side of the House, questioning how none of them could identify the individual despite being seated with a clear view of the Minority caucus. The Speaker also expressed concern over the apparent failure of the House's surveillance and CCTV systems to capture the offending MP, stressing that the matter was serious and required concrete evidence before action could be taken.

The incident has sparked intense media scrutiny, with many calling for accountability and disciplinary measures against the MP responsible.

In a statement on Tuesday, May 27, Bagbin emphasized the need for evidence-based action, saying,“The investigations are still not concluded, but to be frank with you, I am very disappointed with all of you,” the Speaker said. “A member seated in this House with all colleagues around uttered those words, and no single colleague can pinpoint who it was. Even among the three of you seated together — the zone is on the three — none can say who said it.”

“The majority members, with your numbers watching the minority — you are telling me none of you can identify the person who spoke? The person spoke not once, but twice, and even the Minority Leader turned in that direction, yet still no identification?” he asked.

“These are serious matters.'' “When they are properly brought to me, I take action. Shouts and noise will not compel me to act — you know what to do,'' he added.

The Speaker's frustration underscores the challenges of maintaining decorum and accountability within the Ghanaian Parliament. Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings, a prominent figure in Ghanaian politics and daughter of the late President Jerry John Rawlings, has been at the center of the controversy, with many expecting swift action against the MP responsible for the insult.
