A/R: Ghana Highway Authority, National Security Investigate Corruption Allegations at Axle Load Station

Afigya Kwabre North District, Ashanti Region - 4 July, 2025 - A joint investigation has been launched by Ghana's National Security operatives and the Ghana Highway Authority into alleged corruption at the Akom Axle Load Station in the Ashanti Region.

The probe was initiated after a group of National Democratic Congress (NDC) youth staged a protest at the facility, accusing officials of under-declaring and embezzling fines from overloaded vehicles.

The protesters alleged that some officials were striking unofficial deals with drivers, allowing them to continue their journeys with excess cargo, and targeting international trucks for bribes of up to GHS20,000 without issuing official receipts.

National Security officers have been stationed at the facility to ensure uninterrupted operations while engaging with the Ghana Highway Authority to address concerns.

The investigation will also focus on allegations of unauthorized checkpoints along the route where drivers are extorted without receipts.

Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator, Captain John Kwame Jabari, confirmed that investigations are underway, with a team meeting on July 3 to discuss the issues and promising to provide updates.

“Yesterday, {Thursday, July 3}, they brought a team to come and meet us at the RCC, and we went over some of the issues. The team promised that they are going to work on it and get back to us. I am sure by Monday they will do so,” he said.
