AngloGold Ashanti Schools in Obuasi shut down amid security concerns
Obuasi, Ghana - 19 Jan, 2025 - A temporary closure has been announced by AngloGold Ashanti Schools in Obuasi, Ghana, due to growing security concerns in the town.
The decision follows a series of incidents, including the burning of vehicles and damage to private properties.
Tensions have been running high in Obuasi after violent clashes between small-scale miners and military personnel guarding the AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine resulted in the deaths of eight people.
In a statement, the school management cited the need to ensure the safety and welfare of students, staff, parents, and other stakeholders as the reason for the closure. The schools will remain shut on Monday and Tuesday, with plans to reopen on Wednesday, provided the situation returns to normal.
