Alabaster Box Threatens to Sue Medikal Over Unauthorised Sampling in 'Welcome to Africa'

Accra, Ghana - 09 April, 2025 - Ghanaian music group Alabaster Box is set to take legal action against rapper Medikal (real name, Samuel Adu Frimpong) over allegations of copyright infringement.
The dispute centers on Medikal's song "Welcome to Africa," which Alabaster Box claims unlawfully samples their hit song "Akwaaba" without permission.
Alabaster Box alleges that the opening seconds of "Welcome to Africa" bear a significant resemblance to their copyrighted composition. The group claims that Medikal's actions constitute the creation of a derivative work, violating their exclusive rights. They also allege that Medikal's familiarity with their music suggests intentional infringement.

The group has demanded that Medikal immediately withdraw "Welcome to Africa" from all platforms, cease its public performance and marketing, and submit all related agreements and financial accounts. If Medikal fails to comply, Alabaster Box may pursue legal proceedings, including a court injunction and claims for damages.
The case highlights the importance of protecting creative rights in the music industry. In Ghana, copyright infringement is a serious offense, with laws in place to protect intellectual property.
