Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council to Petition Bagbin Over "Defamatory" Remarks on JB Danquah

Kyebi, Eastern Region, Ghana - 06 March, 2025 - The Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council has taken umbrage with remarks reportedly made by Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Murtala Mohammed, describing the late Dr. Joseph Boakye Danquah, as a "traitor" and a "CIA operative".
The council considers the comments an insult to Dr. Danquah's legacy and the nation and thus are demanding action over the alleged derogatory remarks.
In a show of solidarity, the youth of Okyeman have joined the traditional council in condemning the remarks, calling for a retraction and an apology. The council is set to petition the Speaker of Parliament over the matter, seeking a formal response.
The controversy has sparked a wider debate about the importance of respecting Ghana's national heroes and the need for public figures to be mindful of their language.
Osabarima Okogyeaman Apagya Fori IV, the Kyebi Apapamuhene and warlord of Akyem Abuakwa, confirmed to Channel One News in an interview that the traditional council will submit a formal petition to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Babin on March 7. This announcement came after a solemn ceremony where libations were poured at the grave of JB Danquah in Kyebi.
“We are here to show our concern to the Speaker that someone has insulted our beloved JB Danquah despite his contributions to the nation. He doesn’t deserve that. We have poured libation and tomorrow, we will send our petition.” he said.
