Akwatia Residents Heads to the Polls in Crucial By-Election

Akwatia ,Ghana, September 2,2025 - Residents of Akwatia in Ghana's Eastern Region are today expected to cast their votes in a highly anticipated by-election, which promises to be a closely contested one. The by-election is necessitated by the death of the constituency's Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi, and will determine who will represent the area in parliament.

The outcome of the election is expected to provide valuable insights into the mood of the electorate and the popularity of the various political parties. Voters are likely to be swayed by key issues such as economic development, which has been a major concern for many Ghanaians.

According to two independent polls, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Bernard Baidoo Bediako, is the frontrunner in the Akwatia parliamentary by-election. However, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its candidate are expected to put up a strong fight, making the election a closely contested one.

To ensure a peaceful process, the Ghana Police Service has deployed hundreds of officers to various centers in the Akwatia constituency. The deployment is part of a larger security operation involving more than 5,500 personnel, aimed at maintaining law and order across polling stations, collation centers, and identified hotspots.

The Akwatia by-election has attracted national attention, with both the NPP and NDC going head-to-head in what is expected to be a fiercely contested race. The outcome of the election will not only determine the representative of the constituency but also provide insights into the popularity of the various political parties.

Efforts by the National Peace Council to secure a peace pact between the NDC and NPP ahead of the by-election have hit a setback. Despite this, the Ghana Police Service has assured the public of a peaceful process, stressing that contingency measures, including possible military backup, are in place to swiftly respond to any disturbances.

The Akwatia by-election is significant not only for the constituency but also for the national political landscape. The outcome of the election will have implications for the representation of the area in parliament and will provide valuable insights into the mood of the electorate.
