Akufo-Addo approves reclassification of Districts into Municipalities
Accra, Ghana - Nov 7, 2024 - President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has given the green light for the reclassification of several districts into municipalities and some municipalities into metropolises.
This move follows a request from the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development (MLGDRD) and is in line with Act 936, which governs local government structures in Ghana.
The upgrade of specific municipal and district assemblies is now official, pending completion of all necessary legal and administrative procedures. However, the decision to elevate Ho Municipal to a Metropolis and the proposed upgrading of Offinso North and Birim North Districts to Municipalities is still under review.
Affected Districts:
- Offinso North District: Currently one of the 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana, with a population of 83,440 as of the 2021 Population and Housing Census.
- Birim North District: Awaiting decision on proposed upgrade to Municipality.
- Ho Municipal: Under review for potential elevation to Metropolis.
Additionally, petitions for the creation of new districts are being carefully considered. This development aims to enhance local governance and administrative efficiency across the country.
