A Piece of Mars: Rare Meteorite from Niger Sells for Millions, Sparks Outrage
A rare Martian meteorite, discovered in the Sahara Desert, has sparked controversy after being sold at a Bonhams auction in New York for a substantial amount. The meteorite, known as the "Superb Main Mass – Individual," is composed of Martian shergottite and chondrite, making it a highly valuable and sought-after specimen.
Only 245 meteorites have been classified as Martian in origin, and this particular specimen is one of them. The meteorite's value lies in its rarity, with prices ranging from $375,000 to $450,000. Its authenticity and extraterrestrial origin have been verified, making it a prized possession for collectors and institutions.
The government of Niger is now seeking answers about the meteorite's discovery and sale. As the country where the meteorite was allegedly found, Niger's authorities are questioning how the specimen was removed from the country and sold abroad without their knowledge or consent.
This incident is not isolated, as seen in the case of the Tisserlittine 001 lunar meteorite. Discovered in Mali's Sahara Desert in 2019, this meteorite sold at a Christie's auction for $525,000. The 4th largest piece of the moon on Earth, it weighed around 88 pounds.
Martian meteorites like the Superb Main Mass – Individual provide valuable insights into the planet's composition and history. Scientists study these meteorites to understand Mars' geological processes and potential biosignatures. NASA's Perseverance rover has also been exploring Mars and discovering intriguing rocks that may hold clues to the planet's past.
Bonhams and Christie's are renowned auction houses that have sold several valuable meteorites in recent years. The prices fetched by these meteorites demonstrate their rarity and the demand for extraterrestrial specimens. Other notable meteorite sales include the Fukang Meteorite ,old for $1,773,593, this meteorite is considered one of the most expensive and rare meteorites ever sold ,the Willamette Meteorite ,valued at $1,100,000 to $1,300,000, this 15.5-ton meteorite is one of the largest iron meteorites in the world and the Brenham Meteorite sold for $934,680.32, this Martian shergottite meteorite is highly prized for its rarity and scientific significance.
