We will soon activate an investigation into the National Cathedral Project - Mahama

Accra, Ghana - 12 Jan, 2025 - Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama has vowed to investigate the National Cathedral Project, a contentious initiative spearheaded by his predecessor, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The project, aimed at creating a national Christian worship center, has been marred by allegations of corruption and financial mismanagement, sparking concerns over its execution and funding.

Speaking at a Christian National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service, President Mahama expressed skepticism about the project's financial prudence, particularly in light of Ghana's current economic challenges. He announced plans to activate an investigation into the project, following a directive from the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to audit the project and probe any misuse of public funds.

The president also criticized the project's staggering cost, estimated at $400 million, drawing comparisons with the National Ecumenical Centre in Abuja, Nigeria, which was built at a significantly lower cost of $30 million. This move signals the government's intent to address concerns surrounding transparency and accountability in the project.

“On the vexed issue of the National Cathedral, CHRAJ directed the government to audit the project and investigate any misuse of public funds. We will soon activate an investigation into the project,” he stated.

"In the current circumstances that Ghana is going through, it makes no sense to achieve such a project at a whopping sum of $400 million. I am informed that the National Ecumenical Centre in Abuja, which is used by the Christian faith in Nigeria, was built at the cost of $30 million,'' he added.
