Steve Clarke fumes at Argentinian referee after Scotland's elimination from Euro 2024.
Scotland was eliminated from Euro 2024 after losing 1-0 to Hungary on Sunday evening.
Steve Clarke's side fought for a late winner, with Grant Hanley hitting the post in injury time, but they were unable to score. Hungary would then reverse the tide on the Scots, with Kevin Csoboth completing a stunning counterattack by blasting in a pass from Roland Sallai into the Scotland net, securing a 1-0 victory.
After the game, Manager of Scotland, Steve Clarke chastised Argentinian referee Facundo Tello after Scotland was eliminated from the Euros by Hungary in the dying moments. Clarke was pressed on the rare use of a referee from another continent and suggested this competition be refereed solely by European referees.
“It was 100% a penalty,” Clarke said. “Somebody, somewhere has to explain to me why that is not a penalty. It was, 100%. It was a one-goal game; if we get the penalty it can be a different night. I have other words but I am not going to use them.”
“European competition, might have been better to have a European referee,” the manager said. “But we had European VAR. Maybe the referee didn’t see the challenge clearly on the pitch so what’s the purpose of VAR if they are not going to come in on something like that? It was a penalty, he stated.
Meanwhile, Hungary striker Barnabas Varga is said to be "stable" in hospital after being carried off on a stretcher following a mid-air clash with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn in Sunday night's Euro 2024 match.
Varga sustained a fractured cheek bone and will have an operation, Hungary manager Marco Rossi told journalists.
