Police restore order in Walewale, arrests one person

Walewale, Ghana - September 10, 2024 - The Ghana Police Service has successfully quelled a disturbance that occurred during the vote-counting process in the rerun of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Primary in Walewale.

The incident led to the arrest of Kamara Bawah, who is currently in police custody for allegedly damaging several ballot papers.

Security measures have been beefed up in Walewale and surrounding areas to maintain law and order.

The disturbance was not an isolated incident, as the day was marked by sporadic disruptions, including reports of military personnel assaulting individuals at the voting centre.

Aspirant Dr Mahama Tia Kabiru and his team had raised concerns about the venue and the lack of transparency in the electoral process. The vote-counting was conducted behind closed doors, sparking doubts about the fairness of the rerun.

Dr Kabiru expressed disappointment with the handling of the election, questioning the democratic process within the NPP. His supporter, Mohammed Muniru Janda, claimed that Kabiru was leading during the sorting process before the disruption and raised concerns about the security of the ballots.

The incident has cast a shadow over the NPP primary, with many calling for a transparent and fair electoral process.
