Paris Olympics:France beat United States in Olympics Opener
France defeated the United States 3-0 on Wednesday as the men's Olympic tournament opened in Marseille with group play.
After a scoreless first half, the floodgates opened when Alexandre Lacazette, one of France's senior players, sent a shot past US goalkeeper Patrick Schulte to make it 1-0.
Michael Olise, who just moved from Crystal Palace to Bayern Munich, extended the lead shortly after. Loïc Badé scored a header before full-time to give Thierry Henry's host team the opening win and top spot in Group A.
Before finding its rhythm, France had to fight hard against a United States team that had a shot from Djordje Mihailovic strike the crossbar when the game was still tied. Lacazette scored almost quickly afterward.
Thierry Henry is manager of France's Olympic team.
The United States, making its first Olympic appearance in men's soccer since 2008, is third place behind New Zealand, which defeated Guinea 2-1 in the day's other Group A match.
